On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2022 and the transition to the year of the Water Tiger, the EXHIBITION ZEUN (DẦN) evokes the place of the Tiger in Vietnamese beliefs and spirituality. Through a series of calligraphic and digital paintings, each image of Tiger reveals each artist's feelings, points of view and vision of the place that this central animal of the Vietnamese zodiac occupies in their lives.
First digital Painting _ "Bố Sửu Mẹ Dần"
"Bố Sửu Mẹ Dần" (Father-buffalo Mother-tiger), a Black and White drawing imbued with my personal history and Vietnamese culture, with a father of the sign of the buffalo (Bố Sửu) and a mother of the sign of the Tiger (Mẹ Dần).
This drawing, a link between the year of the buffalo we are about to leave and the year of the Tiger in which we will enter, mixes modern art and Asian tradition, interweaving the two animals, one black and the other white, in the form of a notch to the Yin-yang well known to all.
With this work I wanted to tattoo on my back to benefit from the protection of these ascendants expresses in a very personal and ultimate way the link maintained by all Vietnamese with their ancestors (materialized by the altar of ancestors present in all Vietnamese houses). Meaning, my family will always behind me, look after me even though we are thousands kilometers apart.
Second Painting _ "Hà Gừ"
For this project "ZEUN (Dần)", I wanted to add color to my mood of expression, I usually centered on black and white because I believe that only on the every colors which it's white and non color which it's black, I can express the rawest version of me.
It will bring us a surprise: a new colorful calligraphy painting of a Tiger, inspired by the Stone Tiger God present in the culture of the Hà Nhì ethnic minority – one of the 54 ethnic groups all up in the North of Vietnam. To bring the strength of the Tiger to our approach to promoting Vietnam's century-old tea plants, I dyed the background of this drawing with water infused with our Ban Lien black tea from Tra Art Paris.
My dad and his friends had always come and go to villages of all ethnic minority, to build school for children. The Hà Nhì ethnic minority, they have a myth about Stone Tiger God, names "Hà Gừ" suddenly appears in four corners as a symbols to protect the village and their rice paddle fields. By taking this myth as my inspiration for this Lunar New Year project, I want do a tribute 50% money of this painting for the children that are studying in the Ha Nhi's primary school.
